You know the old adage, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” This saying rings true when it comes to Roma Pride. Tens of thousands of Italians and Europeans alike gathered around Rome’s ancient Colosseum over the weekend under crystal clear, sunny skies and partied like paesani.
Participants traveled in rainbow-colored trucks from Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza Venezia square, a central hub in Rome.
After years of very little municipal support, the event played host to Rome’s centrist mayor Roberto Gualtieri. His attendance has been described as “very encouraging” by the Italian gay rights association Circolo di Cultura Omosessuale Mario Mieli.
In a statement, Roma Pride spokesperson Mario Colamarino said we need to help protect “our community, in particular for transgender people, who are too often discriminated against and victims of violence, inside and outside the workplace.”
“No conquest can be considered definitive, no struggle must be archived as anachronistic and outdated, no evolution can save us from dangerous and violent involution. We cannot be helpless witnesses, we have the moral duty to become protagonists of a new resistance.”
