Maybe Christchurch men are friendlier than further north, but I've had more good times/hour at Menfriends than most other such places in the North Island. But then, I've only gone to the naked Saturday afternoons - maybe that's just a friendly time. The facilities there are varied, clean and all have been working every time I"ve been there. The men are also varied, all ages and types. Update: 2016, my first time at the new post-quake venue. This is now the best male venue in New Zealand (with the possible exceptions of Bodyworks in Dunedin and the post-fire WIngate in Auckland, which I haven't seen yet). It's clean, friendly, fully equipped, logically laid out and when I was there on a Saturday afternoon (naked) and evening (sleaze) it was packed with agreeable men. I loved how it transformed between the afternoon and evening, with lanterns, lasers, glo-rings and smoke, and the offer of a shot of whisky on arrival. (I don't know why the orgy room, theatre and dungeon are named in French, but they're not hard to interpret, and "WANK" is clear enough.) I've given it one more star.

Variable

Now that it's the only gay sauna in the lower North Island, the standard has fallen almost to that of the Wakefield that used to be here, back in its bad old monopoly days. Staff are definitely friendlier than then. Facilities are adequate and usually clean enough. Clientele are mixed-age, tending towards older, but can be very few at off-peak times. Friday evening is busiest, followed by Sunday afternoon.
