For most people, Cabo is just a vacation – a chance to sip cocktails in the sun, to kiss in front of the sunset. But for Ricardo Seco, it was a chance to share his love of fashion with the world. The designer, who splits his time between Mexico City and New York City, recently showcased his “Queer as F*ck” and “Pride” collections at the ME Cabo Hotel in Cabo San Lucas. The gender-bending, scorpion-branded collections previously made an appearance at none other than New York Fashion Week.
Of course, Seco’s show at ME Cabo was nothing to sniff at, either. Flanked by a stunning view of the famous Cabo Arch and attended by Mexican celebrities, the show made perfect use of ME’s stylish and cavernous lobby. It also gave GayCities a chance to get to know Seco. He tells us more about his show as well as his travel tips for anyone planning a Mexican vacation…
GayCities: Now that some time has passed, what are your feelings about your show in Cabo the other weekend?
Seco: The weekend in Los Cabos was amazing. I think it was one of my best weekends of the year, with the best food and the best people. I enjoyed a lot sharing the best vibes with everyone.
ME Cabo seemed like a great location to have this show, especially since Lover’s Beach was right there in the background. Outside of that view, what did you love about the venue?
I love the hotel. I love all the ambient music, the restaurants, the food, everything. It helps to enjoy a different type of weekend – a weekend where you can feel happy and free.
What did you intend to show with this collection?
It’s a special collection for everyone that enjoys being free and sharing good vibes and being free of gender. The clothes don’t have gender.
You spend a lot of time in Mexico City. What are your personal favorite places to eat and to go out?
I love Contramar and Botánico. I love Contramar for its tuna tostadas, pescado a la talla, fish tacos al pastor, and strawberries and cream merengue.
My favorite club is MN Roy. I love the music, the gender-less environment, the cocktail menu, and the varied DJs. But I also love Café Paraíso.
What’s your favorite town or city that you visited outside of Mexico City?
I love San Miguel de Allende. For hotels there, I love Hotel Rosewood. For food, I love Pegaso, Atrio, and Áperi. For going out, I love La Azotea, it’s the best! Also Quince, Luna Rooftop, and La Veintiunica.
Where are the best places for nature lovers to visit in Mexico?
Malinche mountain [an inactive volcano that you can hike] and Pico de Orizaba [the highest mountain in Mexico and an active stratavolcano].
OK, thanks for the tips! So, what’s your next big project?
I have some special big projects coming up. I have one with the Teotihuacán pyramids. “Let’s save the pyramids” is the name. It’s a special collection inspired by the Quetzalcóatl pyramid [the famed Temple of the Feathered Serpent]. I love this project. It fills me with joy that in Mexico there’s Teotihuacán, which represents the center of the universe.
