The Human Rights Campaign released its much-anticipated Municipal Equality Index. The report assesses just how well a city treats all things LGBTQ. Criteria include everything from legal protections to domestic partner benefits for city employees to how hard its leaderships pushes back against state and federal laws harming or limiting equality.
Much to our delight, a number of second and third-tier urban scored a perfect 100 this year, matching famously gay-friendly metropolises such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City. That means they all featured elected queer officials, services for gay elderly, homeless LGBTQ youth, and did well on other important measures.
We’ve reviewed the report, and picked out some of the most delightful–and unexpected–surprise cities that welcome gay visitors while serving as a fabulous home to its residents. The more welcoming places we can enjoy the better, and these are all worth adding to your bucket list.
