Often referred to as a slice of Europe in North America, Montréal is Québec’s largest city and super gay-friendly — so don’t be afraid to show (and seek) some affection.

The heart of Gay Village boasts a vibrant canopy of 180,000 resin balls inspired by colors of the rainbow flag. The installation by artist Claude Cormier, originally put up in 2011, will be permanently retired once the balls come down September 2019.
This hotspot is one of the many reasons to stroll along Saint-Catherine Street where gay bars, strip clubs, restaurants, shops and cafes thrive.

GayCities caught up with the travel videographers to get the dish on the best of Montréal.
Was that your first time in Montréal?
John: It was our first time in Montréal. We both lived in New York for years, and had always heard what a special place it was, and it was so fun to finally experience it for ourselves. The rumors are true, it’s a really magical city.
What was your most surprising discovery during this visit?
Kit: I had heard that it was like a little bit of Europe in Canada. We visited France last summer on our honeymoon and it reminded me so much of that trip. The art, the history, the architecture, and the energy really reminded me of Paris, but with its own unique culture.
Which food place would you absolutely go back for?
Kit: The poutine at la Banquise was amazing, and I loved that they had a bunch of great vegetarian options.
John: Dinner at Maggie Oakes was lovely. We sat out on the front patio as the sun set and got to enjoy a delicious meal with beautiful scenery and fun people watching.
Which Montréal activity/experience do you wish you’d made more time for during the trip?
Kit: I was sad to give up our scooters. It was such a fun, easy way to get around the city.
John: I would love to go back and experience more of the nightlife. We got to see local legend Mado perform at [the bar] Cabaret Mado, but there are so many other spots in Montréal’s Gay Village I would love to check out.
