Here are the winners of two special Best of GayCities, 2016, honors…

In addition to our annual Best of GayCities awards, this year the editors at GayCities present two special honors, one to a city that distinguished itself for strength and compassion in the face of adversity, and the other to a travel innovator who put the “T” back in LGBTQ travel.

The city-of-the-year award goes to Orlando, Florida

GayCities honors the city & community of Orlando for its compassion and resiliency in the wake of the horrific Pulse Nightclub massacre of 2016. We salute your bravery and spirit in the face of unspeakable cruelty and adversity, an example to us all, making the city the ideal recipient of the first-ever city award.

When planning your vacations, please consider spending some of your dollars in Orlando as it rebuilds its community. Not only are you paying homage to the place, but it’s an often overlooked vacation paradise, with amazing events from June’s Gay Days Orlando to September’s Orlando Pride, which this year drew 150,000 revelers. And don’t forget the simple pleasures of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World.

The inaugural innovator award goes to Richard Gray

GayCities honors Richard Gray for his career of promoting LGBTQ tourism in Fort Lauderdale as managing director the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. This year Richard created the first-ever destination marketing program for the transgender community. Richards vision, leadership and commitment to helping others make him the ideal recipient for GayCities first-ever Innovator Award.

“Now is the time for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau to emphasize the importance of the T in LGBT,” Gray told GayCities. “The often forgotten T, I am saddened to say. I want Transgender travelers to Greater Fort Lauderdale to be like all travelers. Free to be themselves, free to be accepted and most of all safe, welcome and respected. Diversity and inclusion reign supreme here in Greater Fort Lauderdale. It is an integral part of our personality and it is who we are as a destination.”
