Davy D, the Stoli Guy Boston winner, proved he had all the makings of a pop star at the GayCities-produced star search that took place at Boston’s Club Cafe.
Now Davy is getting ready to travel to New York City for the national finale. Will he be the one to claim the $10,000 prize?
Can you give us a little teaser of what your original talent showcase will be at the finale on September 18?
I’ll be performing to a remix of an original song I wrote called “Hands Up!”
How did your friends and family react when you were crowned Stoli Guy 2014 in your hometown?
My friends and family were totally jazzed about it. The best reaction was when I heard my mom scream (in her high-pitched voice), “That’s my son!” like the loud Italian woman she is. Everyone has been 100% supportive and can’t wait to see me compete in NYC.
Being an LGBT ambassador for Stoli is an exciting job. Why do you think you’d be the best at it?
I think I’d be best for the job because aside from performance, I’m equally as passionate about current events and politics. I enjoy having meaningful conversations and shaking hands with all kinds of people. Being an ambassador would be a great platform for me to talk about and bring more awareness to these issues.
Why do you think being “authentic” is important in the LGBT community?
I think at one point or another we have all felt pressure to think like others, dress like others and act like others. Conforming is counter-productive in discovering who we are as originals. You can’t find yourself if you’re a carbon copy of someone or something else. But if you know who you are, you automatically have a leg up on life, because you have better guidance and direction. That’s the reason why being authentic and true to yourself (and others) is so important.
What inspired you to participate in Stoli Guy 2014?
I saw an advertisement for the Stoli Guy 2014 competition, and I thought to myself why not? #Yolo. On a more serious note, I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to perform in front of an audience.
Favorite Stoli Guy Cocktail: A mix between Future Husband (Stoli Original + Ginger Beer) and Boy Next Door (Stoli Blueberi + Lemonade). I love ginger beer, and “Stoli Blueberi” is definitely one of my favorite-go-to flavored vodkas.
