Checking In with Porn Star Steve Cruz

Steve Cruz has become the darling of the gay erotic industry, and with good reason. This porn maverick is more than just a great performer, nominated for awards at this year’s GayVN awards as a director, performer and web producer. He is also an outspoken advocate for safe sex with his HowIRoll campaign.

We caught up with Steve to find out how to make the most of your Folsom Street Fair weekend.

What’s the deal with GayVN/Folsom collision?

Its going to be interesting to say the least. Folsom on its own is a huge happening, adding GAYVN awards kicks it up a notch, especially for us in the industry. This Folsom marks my fourth year in the business where I’ve taken part in some kind of event or appearance to support a movie I’ve either starred in or directed. I meet more fans this time of year than any–that’s the fun part for me.

You’re an award winner from past GAYVNs. How do your nerves stack up this time around?

Actually I have one GAYVN from 2008, for a group scene in Link The Evolution, a Chi Chi LaRue film. I’ve been nominated for Performer of the Year twice but never won. This year is my third nomination in the same category which is in of itself pretty exciting. My own web studio, HardFriction.com, is also nominated twice.

Share your party timeline. Where are you going?

Naked Sword is throwing the annual GAYVN after party. I was the poster boy for last year’s Shameless–it seemed almost everyone in the industry made an appearance. This year should be just as exciting. Every year my home studio Raging Stallion throws its annual anniversary party where they announce our Man of the Year award. I won in 2008 so its like I’m an alum. Magnitude is the official Folsom event; I’ll probably make an appearance again this year.

Some might be confused and try to make one outfit work for both events. Should be good for some laughs though— formal harness withmatching wrist cuffs and cumberbund?

Mr. S and Stockroom.com have been good to me in past years for gear for the fair. For GayVN night I’ll be wearing leather. Only on my feet! I’m sporting new Nikes from Nomads in Hayes Valley, a sports jacket I picked up at Sui Generis on Market Street and a tie. I’ve picked up some interesting ties at Ben Sherman and Barney’s downtown. I’m leaving the fetish gear to the real players.
