Madonna makes a surprise visit to Stonewall Inn to celebrate 50th anniversary of the riots

Maybe more than any other night of the year, New Year’s Eve has the capacity to sorely disappoint. The amount of fun actually counting down to midnight while you (hopefully) lock lips with a suitable companion is almost always overshadowed by the hassle and expense required to get there.

That said, every few years the New Year’s Eve we end up having somehow magically lives up to the hype. Patrons of New York’s Stonewall Inn were treated to a surprise performance by none other than Madonna, which beats a kiss anytime.

We’re pretty sure anyone lucky enough to be at one of the places we’ve listed below had one of those nights for the books.

1. The Stonewall Inn, New York City

If you happened to be in Manhattan Tuesday and thought it would be fun to go “old school gay” while ringing in 2019, you very likely might have found yourself grabbing a drink at the Stonewall Inn. You may have also found yourself watching Madonna perform a few songs during a surprise gig to honor the tavern as it celebrates 50 years since the riots that started the modern gay rights movement.

2. White Party, Puerto Vallarta

Was it 70-some degrees where you were when the clock struck midnight? Were you surrounded on all sides by buff, sweaty men dressed like this? Yeah, neither were we.

3. White Party, Bangkok

Speaking of White Party, the Thai capital plays host to yet another iteration of Jeffrey Sanker’s growing franchise of similarly named events. And, with four days of partying spread out over five different indoor/outdoor venues, White Party Bangkok also happens to be the world’s largest New Year’s festival.

4. The WE Party, Madrid

For the past eight years, Madrid’s WE Party Group has thrown a high-drama New Year’s Eve circuit event known to attract a roster of A-list DJs and the hard-bodied party boys who love to dance to them.

5.First Light, Provincetown, Mass.

Our favorite resort on a Cape comes to life one last time for this annual five-day event featuring fun parties, spectacular fireworks, and a Polar Bear Plunge.
