Mary's Bar Bar/Club in Houston
***** Oldest Levi/Leather Bar in Houston
First to Review - August 23, 2005 Visited: August 2005
Mary's "Naturally" is the oldest Levi / Leather bar in Houston. A small bar located on the corner of Westheimer and Waugh and across the street from Chances / The New Barn. The clientele is a mix of old leather and new leather. They have a fairly large patio and a yard that extends beyond and separated from the patio. Both are enclosed by an 8 foot wooden fence. There is a pool table and a couple of video machines. Their busiest time is during the June Pride Parade and LUEY (Let Us Entertain You) weekend (the weekend after Mardi Gras). Occasional Drag Shows are held on the Patio in the cooler months.

611 Hyde Park Pub Bar/Club in Houston
***** Hustlers, Trolls and Drugs...Oh My!
First to Review - August 23, 2005 Visited: June 2000
Just skip this bar by. How it's remained open as long as it has is a Mystery. If, however, you are looking for street boys, by all means, this is the place.

Montrose Mining Company Bar/Club in Houston
***** Bears, Leather and Go Go Boys
First to Review - August 23, 2005 Visited: July 2005
The Montrose Mining Company is a part of the 800 Pacific Street Bars. Across the street from JR's and South Beach (SoBe) this bar is dark and is pretty cramped on the weekends. Crusing and groping are common. The bar is home to Bears, Leather and their admirer's. There are 3 Bars, one in the main building and two on the patio, the bar has a couple of video machines as well as two pool tables. The music is always great. The mens room has a trough urinal, with mirror so you don't have to crane your neck to see the guys package standing next to you. For the pee shy, there is a single stall and as with most gay bars, a womans restroom with a single stall that is used by more men than women - even though women frequent the bar as well. Note to visitors: If you like peanuts, look for the barrels and don't worry about dropping the shells on the floor.

Guava Lamp Bar/Club in Houston
***** Much Better than the Last
First to Review - August 23, 2005 Visited: June 2005
The new location of Guava Lamp, I have to admit is much better than it's last location. Located in the corner of a strip center, the patrons are a mix of men and women, generally the preppy, collegiate, A&F crowd mixed with older professional gay men and women. There is only one bar in the place, but with quick service and a friendly staff. Semi circular booths run along the outside walls. There is a "lounge" with sofa and chairs located at the back of the bar along with a pool table. Flat screen televisions provide videos of all the top pop / dance music and add to the ultra modern decor. If you like "Martini Bars", with a good size crowd of friendly people, I recommend you come here.

EJ's Bar/Club in Houston
***** Out of the ordinary
First to Review - August 23, 2005 Visited: February 2005
Don't let first impressions get the best of you when going. Some places are indescribable, EJ's is one of those places. This reviewer has mixed emotions when it comes to this bar. It has a very eclectic group of people that frequent the place. The clientele is generally older. It has a reputation for being a hustler bar, but the times I've been, I've never seen the numerous hustlers that the bar rumours to have. There is great potential in the bar to be one of the hottest bars in Houston. Off the main street and with ample free parking all this bar needs is some modernization. It has a huge dance floor and Patio with a bar. There is a pond with Coy Fish, a deck and a aviary filled with Parakeets (last time I was there). Monday nights is an amature Go-Go boys dance contest. The stage is small and off to the side, with little seating. Amenities are: 1 pool table, a couple of pinball and video machines a crane game and a snack machine. If you're looking for a cruise bar, a twink bar or a packed dance club, this isn't the place to go, but if you're looking for something out of the ordinary with friendly people and if the mood hits, a place to dance, then you may like this bar. I have to rate it neutral, as I said, I have mixed emotions about the place. On a side note, if you're a woman, you will need to get a key from the bartender to use the bathroom. The mens room, however, it always unlocked.

Decades Bar/Club in Houston
***** If you're in the neighborhood
First to Review - August 23, 2005 Visited: February 2005
Decades is a small neighborhood bar with a friendly Staff, two pool tables, shuffle board and a juke box. A great place to go, have a drink and meet with friends for conversation. The clientele, mostly professional men, are more in their 40's and above. Definately not a cruise bar, nor a hot spot, but if you're looking a place to just sit and chat with friends, this is a great place to go.

Cousins Bar/Club in Houston
***** Drag and More
First to Review - August 23, 2005 Visited: August 2005
A small bar, Cousins my well be the only "Drag Bar" left in Houston. This reviewer doesn't find anything at this bar worth going to see. If you are, however, into the Drag/Hustler/Elderly crowd, then you may just find this bar the place to go. Other than that, I don't have much information.

Brazos River Bottom Bar/Club in Houston
***** If Wrangler Butt's Drive You Nuts.......
First to Review - August 23, 2005 Visited: March 2005
The BRB, as we call it, has been Houston's number 1 country western hot spot for years. If you like Hot Country Music, Hot Men in Wranglers and a staff of friendly bartenders, this is the place to go in Houston. The dance floor is usually full with Two-Stepping and Waltzing. 3 bars, one in front, one in back and one off to the side. This is a quieter bar with a juke box (full of all your country favorites - new and old) They have a couple of video games and two pool tables. If you need your boots shined, there's a boot shine stand where you can watch the wrangler butts pass.

Ripcord Bar/Club in Houston
***** Ahhh. The Ripcord
First to Review - August 21, 2005 Visited: August 2005
This neiborhood Levi/Leather/Bear bar has been around for years and I for one have seen many changes. I consider it to be my home bar. For the most part the men there are men and the women are rare. The bartenders there are great and friendly - as long as they're not busy. The music is good and not too loud that you can't carry on a coversation. They have a number of video games you can play, two pool tables and an area where they show movies on a wide screen TV. They also have a leather store inside the bar. They have expanded their patio and are home to many organzations, i.e., The Brotherhood of Pain, The Misfits, et al. If you're into the Levi/Leather/Bear crowd and are not intimidated by men who are upfront, then this is the bar to go to.

South Beach Bar/Club in Houston
***** Not Like Heaven
First to Review - August 21, 2005 Visited: August 2005
South Beach, or as the locals call it SoBe, would be a fantastic dance club. The music is HOT and the bar is phenomenal. With a huge dancefloor, complete with dance boxes, shirtless dancers, awesome light shows and a "fog machine" that is so intense, you can't see 10 inches in front of your face. Yellow warning lights announce the coming of the fog which lowers the temperature on the dance floor. Barbacks are there to prevent any late comers to the dancefloor, entrance and to maintain the safety of the crowd on the dance floor. It only lasts about 30 seconds, but well worth it. This reviewer, however, doesn't see much worth in the rest of the place. Over priced drinks and cover with a fair portion of the patrons being chemically friendly. If you like Twinks, dancing, drinking and pretentious attitudes this may just be your bar. I'm sorry to say, it's not mine.

JR's Bar/Club in Houston
***** S&M means Stand and Model
First to Review - August 21, 2005 Visited: July 2005
JR's is a great bar. Video's, Dancers, "scary oh key"(Sundays and Thursdays) and a Go-Go boys dance contest with Drag Queens as your mc's on Sunday Nights. I've always enjoyed myself when there. The crowd is a great mix of people. The attitude level isn't off the meter and you can always find a friendly face. Definately not a cruise bar, but lots of eye candy. The "type" is more preppy, but not overly pretentious. It's not a bar that's filled with $30k a year Millionaires, who still live with Mums and Dads, and drive their Beemers/Merc's that mums and dads bought for them. There are a few, but they tend to group themselves like gnats. The music is always lively and they keep current with the videos. There is one DJ, however, that finds it necessary to "grunt" when announcing the drink specials moving from one area of the bar to another - very annoying, but if you can get past that, I highly recommend it.

Chain Drive Bar/Club in Austin
***** Not quite what I was expecting.
Posted: August 21, 2005 Visited: August 2005
I live in Houston and am more familiar with the Leather scene here. To call this bar a leather bar is a misgiving. A dark bar with loud music and a hint of leather doesn't make it a Leather Bar. "You don't have to wear leather, to be leather." Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my time there, but it was definately not what I was expecting. The place is quite large on the outside, with two patios, one small and one large, but it's a waste of space that can be better utilized for something else, like expansion/modernization. They have a small dance floor, but someone must have never revealed, that real leather men don't dance. Get rid of it. The Friday night drink specials were great - $1.00 Domestic, $1.00 Well, with a $3.00 cover - which if anyone complains about that, they shouldn't go. The crowd was a nice mix of people, but hardly the leather/leather bear crowd I was expecting. I would say it's more "Leather Drag" than Leather Men. All in all, I had a good time while there, but it won't be my first stop on my next trip to Austin.

Cockpit Bar/Club in Austin
***** The potential is there.
First to Review - August 21, 2005 Visited: August 2005
When first going into this bar, I was expecting to see quite a large crowd. I could hear the music well before I entered the front door. On a Friday night, you'd certainly expect more that 10 people (including the 2 bartenders), I that's about the entire count. The theme is no longer "Country Western" and is more a mix of Dance and Tejano Dance. It's a nice bar on the inside and quite large, but a big waste of space for the amount of patrons. It has potential, but it's just not there. I suggest, you go in, have a drink, then head out to another bar.

Charlie's Austin Bar/Club in Austin
***** Impressive
Posted: August 21, 2005 Visited: August 2005
I live in Houston and went to visit a friend who has relocated back to Austin. I had been a couple of times and but never to many of the bars. I was very please to be taken to Charlie's. There was a small crowd, which was great and later picked up in number. The owner, David gave me a tour of the place, told me what he had done in the remodeling and what he'd like to do in the future. The Staff was very friendly and great at remember what I was drinking. The owner has also taken into consideration the new smoking ban in clubs and has created a smoking area on their huge patio, which also has a fully stocked and manned bar. If in Austin, I suggest this be your first and only stop.
