Scott Gatz, 53. I'm an explorer at heart, I love to travel and get a feel for the place I'm going. When I get to another city, I enjoy the sights, I look for great restaurants (I'm a sucker for a nice meal) and I always try to hit the bar/club scene to get a feel for the boys in any town.

Location can't be beat, but it's a bit of a (mostly straight) scene with a popular late night club on the rooftop deck. Daytime pool access is by reservation on weekends as it's a scene too. Room was comfortable and spacious in that "it's a small room but it works" kinda way.

The Aloft is well located, easy walking distance from most things downtown, but about 20 minutes to any gay bars which are all out in the outskirts. The hotel is located in this historic building and you can see the beautiful lobby from the pictures. My room was off of the atrium and I loved walking around admiring the view. The rooms furnishings were comfortable and spacious albeit a little personality-less, which is a shame given the wonderful bones of this building. Good little convenience shop with breakfast options in the lobby. I'd stay again.

    Good looking crowd, not pretentious

I love this place for it's mixed age crowd (mostly younger, but not exclusively) and it's general laid back feel. My mainstay is the Sunday afternoon "jock sundays". It's hosted by and donates to a local gay sports team each week, so it brings in new folks along with the regulars each week. It gets packed, but with a goodlooking, non-pretentious crowd.

A wonderful hotel experience, the rooms are spacious, the amenities are top-notch. If you can get a Fairmont Gold room, the top floor lounge is a great place to get free snacks/wine/breakfast and hang out. The Eataly-like store downstairs is unlike any hotel lobby store - amazing cheese and charcuterie selection, hot foods, snacks, the perfect gourmet shop, but in a hotel. Highly recommend this hotel.

I've had so many fun nights at this bar. Usually attracts a younger / clean cut crowd. Downstairs is great for meeting new people and ogling the hot bartenders and gogos. Upstairs has a fun but sometimes too crowded dance floor. My favorite is hanging out on the upstairs balcony hearing the dance music waft out of the doors on a hot night. Oz across the street is probably better for dancing, but I've always made new friends here. It just seems the crowd is more there to meet, chat and well, whatever.

Probably the most well-known bar in the world, the Abbey has got it all. On the negative side: it's gotten super popular with straight girls, and the food isn't all that good. Well worth the carbs & calories. Delfina is one of the best restaurants in the city and their pizzeria next door is perhaps even better. Come here for interesting takes on the favorites and some new ingredient combos and amazing dough. They also have appetizers and a few non-pizza entrees as well. I've been here a number of times and yesterday we sat at the counter and watched them knead mozzarella from the curd they buy from a local dairy. The views are to die for and the service is top notch (Omni runs the place). The rooms in the newer wing where I stayed could use a remodel, the bathrooms remind me a bit of a motel. Ridiculous Price, Amazing Place

Ok, so first off, this place is stupidly expensive. If you judge it by any sort of value for money, you\'ll be disappointed. We let that go and had one of our most memorable dinners ever. Bouillabase and an amazing view is why you come here. It\'s right on the shore. Our waiter came over with 5 whole fish and a whole lobster, then prepared the fish to put it in the stock for the soup. that\'s a lot of food for two, but it was amazing. For dessert, it was beignets and jam. They tried to sell us two orders, but we figured we\'d share one - it was still like a dozen beignets. The jam is in these giant jars that they bring to the table. They claim their grandmother is the only one that knows the recipes and makes it in these jars at home. The jam had odd flavors like tomato jam and a few standards too. I can still picture the place, the waiter, the food -- I highly recommend it for an experience. When we went, they only took cash, so bring boatloads.

Had a great sandwich here and my friends tried the burger and one of the salads that looked great. We resisted the ice cream and the "frozen hot chocolate" which looked very tempting. The atmosphere is vibrant and quite pink, but it's a good location and a fun environment.

New England Fish Shop in SF, Lobster Rolls anyone?

First, it's a bit of a stretch to say this is the Castro. It's in the "crossroads" between the Castro and other hoods. I'm not sure if I'd recommend this to a traveler, but certainly to locals. (Travelers should check out Anchor Oyster Bar on Castro). That having been said, I had a terrific meal here. THe food isn't too expensive, the atmosphere is busy without feeling crowded and the waitstaff is smart and fun. I had a great Halibut and my friend had crab, both were successes. I can't wait to get back and try the Lobster Rolls (maybe go for lunch). Well worth a visit.

    A real SF institution

The Castro theatre is one of those amazing old movie houses that still hints at it's old beauty. It's of another time where people would pack into single theatres to watch one movie. These days they have live shows, the frameline gay film festival (among other festivals) and art pics and mainstream pics too. I love the organ player who plays while you are waiting to see a film, it's worth going early to hear.

    Okay food, fun atmosphere

You don't really come to Harvey's because the food is great, but it's actually not bad. The hamburgers are really great and the salads good too (but I'm not much of a salad person). But the wait staff is always flirty, the other patrons are way gay and if you can get a window seat you can be entertained by the passersby in this, the heart of the Castro.

Amazing food, easier to get into than Osteria

I stumbled into Pizzeria Mozza on accident (it looked nice from the outside), before I knew about all the buzz about this place (I'm not a fan of celeb chef places and Mario Batali doesn't do anything for me). The pizzas were amazing with different ingredients than your standard pizza fare. This reminded me a lot of my hometown's Pizzeria Delfina - high end pizza and italian fare. And the desserts: amazing! We sat at the bar and ate (which meant we got right in), so that might be a good way to beat the crowds.

    Compelling, thought provoking and moving...

I had wanted to go to the Holocaust Museum ever since I heard about it, but I was concerned that it wouldn't live up to the initial hype. But, it is an amazing place. The exhibits are actual things from Germany & Europe leading up to the Holocaust and then through the aftermath. There's a lot of info that they manage to get across (a combination of reading placards and videos), but it never felt laborious. It was easy to work your way through and learn a lot about it. Most striking to me was the use of propaganda in the leadup to it. Ostracize a set of people slowly and surely and eventually add in laws limiting their rights. It is a scary parallel of the gay rights setbacks we've had. I shuddered when I noted some tactics of the Bush administration in the early days. My only disappointment was that the area with the pink triangle seemed easy to miss. I would have liked them to call that out a bit more, especially with the current climate around gay rights. I highly recommend this to anyone visiting DC, it is educational, moving and very well done.

    Beautiful design, a bit cold

I stayed at the Nines when last in Portland and was very impressed with the room, quality of the amenities and the decor. Clearly they wanted the place to look "designed" and *everything* is either aqua or brown. I'm a Starwood fan, and The Nines is one of their "luxury collection", but other than the design, I found little distinction from their other properties - it was large and tended to be impersonal. For a "luxury" hotel, I'd like to be able to feel the extra service and I simply didn't here. Regardless, I'd stay again thanks to the great rooms and the location (right in the heart of downtown near to all transportation).

My favorite place to bring friends

When friends come into town, I always try to get a table at Delfina. This is an Italian place, but it's not the tomato-sauce kind of place. You'll find creative takes on pasta and amazing pizzas, but I almost always order one of their entrees which read more continental than Italian. Their wine list is amazing and the service is always knowledgeable about the menu and their large wine list (with lots of Italian wines). If you are coming to town to meet me, I'll likely take you here.

    Higher end P-town experience

I've been to the Red Inn twice and each time I've had a great meal. I've heard some people say that the menu isn't all that inventive - and that's true, it's a bit more on the seafood/chicken/meat and veggies/potatoes side, but cooked perfectly with great preparation and the service a delight. Come around sunset to enjoy their views or sit on the deck ad have a drink. It's a hike to get here (maybe a 15 minute walk from town), so either plan on the walk or get a cab.

    New and different for ptown

I was surprised to hear about a new bar opening in Provincetown, it is so rare that it happens. This one, however, I think is a win. The bar is basically the lobby area of the Brass Key inn and the courtyard out back. The bartenders were cute and the drinks strong. It's a nice spot to grab a drink with friends, sit around the fire or to meet up with your group that might be staying different places. This is the place to go after dinner but before the A-House, so I'm not sure this would be a place to meet new people (most everyone was with groups of friends). The crowd was slightly older than some other places, but that suited me just fine.

I'm not much of a book person, but from time to time i'll go looking for an interesting travel book or some non-fiction. This store is huge and has a great and very browseable selection. The staff is great and you can go to them with silly questions like "I want to read something light and fun and gay" and they'll point you to them. The shelves also point out staff picks. The store has a few places to sit, but I wish they had more. Also, the magazine collection is large as well and is fun to flip through.

    Great Brunch Spot

I went here on the recommendation of a friend and had a great experience. The restaurant is in the Hotel Andra and is decorated with an updated take on an old school diner, but the food is anything but diner-ish. You *must* get the "donuts made to order" with fresh jam and mascarpone - amazing! The eggs benedict was just so-so, but my partner's Lamb Burger was great and the garlc fried "smashed" potatoes were really tasty. Overall, I highly recommend this place (but skip the benedict).

Stayed here for the 4th of July Weekend and it was quite nice, but nothing made me want to stay here again. THe location is great, right in the middle of downtown shopping and just a few blocks walk from the Capitol Hill bars. The Seattle Sheraton is a giant hotel -- too many people IMHO and is lacking any distinct personality. The cardio workout room on the top floor is quite amazing, but the pool is overrun with kids. You'll wait forever for the elevator and we were met with a long line at the checkin desk. I'm a big Starwood person, but next time I'll try the Westin a few blocks away.

Pretty crowd, Ok food, inattentive service

This is probably the gayest spot in Hell's Kitchen. Was there on a Friday night and it was packed with boys on their way out to the local bars. The food was just ok, but I think you come here more for the energy than the food. Our waiter was more interested in hanging with friends that night, so we had to chase other waiters for whatever we needed. A highlight: The fun bathrooms are all themed (Dolly, Cher, Nelly) and decorated to match with the artist's music playing.

    My favorite in PV

During our trip, we managed to eat here for all three meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. We weren't disappointed. The menu is probably best said to be "continental cuisine", but there were a number of Mexican dishes on the menu too. The preparations were unique and enjoyable (for example, my eggs benedict on a corn meal based english muffin). The location is right on the beach and you can choose to sit out on tables out on the beach/patio which makes for good people watching. It's proximity to the gay beach makes it quite gay popular and a little eye candy during a meal never hurts.

Another unexpected find, a legitimately good Italian restaurant. Michel the owner is ever present (and quite attractive too) and a delight. The food was a bit pricey, but it fit the quality. We had a great meal here - this isn't tomato sauce italian--creative dishes with terrific ingredients (Michel says imported from Italy). The only negative: the night we were there an employee had just gotten a new puppy who was yelping behind the bar. Just made our otherwise great night imperfect.

Chez panisse started the whole idea of "california cuisine" with an emphasis on local produce and meats and fresh, inventive meals. I've only ever been here for lunch (twice), but each time I had an amazing meal. One negative: I found the menu to be intimidating, nothing sounded "normal" and was afraid to be adventurous - but if you get past that and just pick something, you will enjoy it immensely. Feels like the real London

At first I was put off, the music was loud and I wasn't sure if this was my crowd: a mix of hipsters, bearish types and regular guys. But as the evening wore on it was clear that everyone was there to have a great time. A fun mix of electropop, 80s music (they even played El Debarge's Rythym of the Night) kept the crowd bopping. An inspired performance by local gender bender Johnny Woo made the night even more fun (if a bit surreal). This is a must do when in Vauxhall (and worth a trip here regardless).

Peaceful location, great rooms, great pool

I've stayed here a few times (because I've had business in the area) and I highly recommend it. Too often W's can be cold and small - the rooms here are comfortable and reasonably sized - I got rooms with living rooms and desk areas the last three times and they were great. Walk two blocks and you have the funky college town feel of Westwood (UCLA) with some fun little diners and college kids everywhere. You'll need a car if you want to go anywhere else (WeHo, etc), its also quick drive to the Getty from here. The pool area was known (years ago) as the party spot for hollywood, but that seems to have died down thankfully, so you can enjoy the space. Service at the pool isn't great, but it is comfortable. I'd stay here again if I didn't want to be right in WeHo.

My partner and I stayed here over President's Day weekend and had a great time. The owners (John and Jean-Guy) are very present and a part of making your stay enjoyable, which I liked. The crowd naturally gathers for conversations over the morning breakfast, during the afternoon snack/cocktail hour and on Sunday for Margaritas. Pick this place if you want a casual and nice time by the pool and to meet new folks for good conversation. This isn't one of the friskiest resorts - there are better places to stay if you are looking for that - but for an overall relaxing trip, I'd stay here again.

Nice, but not out of this world

Like T.O.C., Woody's is like two places in one. the main bar upstairs and down is a busy, but casual bar and hangout. Pull up a stool and have a beer, talk with friends. Then, if you are so inclined, pay a cover to go into their large dance floor area. The crowd and the place is much more vibrant and fun. The music on the Friday I went was so, so and the crowd breaking out into line dancing was a little bit of a throwback though. I'd stop in again to give it a try on my next trip, but I wouldn't go out of my way unless there's a special event going on.

This is clearly the "hot spot" in Dupont. I went on a Thursday and the crowd started rolling in around 11 for the "Batlle of the Briefs" at 12. The downstairs lounge area feels like a high end living room, upstairs is a mid-size dance floor with shirtless (and hot) bartenders. Comfortable and trendy at the same time

My partner and I stayed here over New Year's 2005/2006 and it was the perfect place for us. The rooms are all suites and we got a junior suite which is just a big room with a living area on one side and bed on the other. The decor of the room was contemporary but very comfortable and since it rained most of our trip we particularly enjoyed the fireplace and the DVD player - unlike most hotel rooms, we felt at home here. My favorite thing about this hotel though is that it is just a block or two off of the main WeHo strip, but in a residential neighborhood. So you really do feel like you are living there. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who wants to stay in WeHo and wants a nice attitude free place.
