Luigi Shiraga is like a one-man gay geek pantheon. As a cosplayer (one who dons the costume personas of pop culture characters), Shiraga has assumed the mantles of such nerdy notables as Marvel Comics super-daddy Mr Fantastic, a homoerotic take on horror villain Freddy Krueger, and a gender-bent Harley Quinn. Over the weekend we met up with the queer cosplayer at LA Comic Con to kiki about his geek chic art form.
What was your first cos-lewk?
Rick Grimes form the Walking Dead. I wanted to do something that was kinda easy, and I could buy everything for it. I was like, “I should wear this to a convention.” I wore it and I fell in love with cosplay.
What’s your favorite cosplay?
I do the comic version of Robin: green briefs, yellow cape. As a kid watching the Adam West Batman series, I didn’t want to be Batman. I wanted to be Robin. I dunno, maybe I like running around in my underwear. I used to dress as Robin, I had green underwear, red polo shirt, and a yellow sweatshirt tied around. Now I have a real costume.
Has copay ever gotten you a guy?
Yes. It connects you with other geeks. Even if the other guy isn’t cosplaying, its a conversation starter.
What’s your dream cosplay?
I’ve done all my favorites characters already. But I want to do Hawkman. I want to find a way to make the wings, and make them come out. Its probably expensive, but I want to do it right.
What is the sexiest male cosplay you have ever seen?
I’m a big Dick Grayson fan and there’s some really good Nightwing. I’m also really like Cyclops. I’ve seen some sexy version of Cyclops. I love that.
In a fight between Dick Grayson and Cyclops, who would win?
I would have to with Dick Grayson, because he’s got the bootie.
If Dick Grayson and Cyclops were to have sex, who would bottom?
Probably Dick Grayson because, once again, he’s got the bootie.
