Save the koalas

Go to a party in NYC, LA, Seattle, D.C., or London and raise money for Australia

Sunday, Jan. 26. is Australia Day, and non-Australians around the world are celebrating, but for a very sad cause: by participating in fundraisers to help the country after the disastrous wildfires that torched millions of acres of land.

The fires have ceased, thanks to the efforts of firefighters from around the world, as well as some rain–but that rain then caused flooding, because the ground did not soak up the water effectively. It’s all a big mess. Let’s not get into the subject of all the dead koalas.

Among the fundraisers are a few that could be popular with the gays:

  • The Two Brewers, a popular gay bar in London, is hosting a 12-hour drag-a-thon from 2pm-2am, and the performers will donate all of their tips
  • E.P. and L.P., an Asian fusion restaurant (not gay but we love it anyway) in West Hollywood, Calif., is hosting their Great Aussie Barbecue, with proceeds being donated to the Australian Bushfire Relief Fund
  • Pitchers, a gay sports bar in Washington, D.C., is hosting a drag show with guys dressed up as kangaroos, who will hop around the room with buckets and collect donations, and there’s going to be a raffle which is always fun
  • In Seattle, there is a drag show fundraiser at Fred, a performance space (which in Seattle, can mean anything) with drag performers and various “performers” (which, again, in Seattle can mean anything), raising funds for an animal refuge in Australia, which isn’t named on the event invite, so once more, that could mean anything

Then the cast and crew of Moulin Rouge! On Broadway will host a fundraiser on Monday, Jan. 27, in NYC at Le Poisson Rouge. They can’t hold a fundraiser on Sunday because they have a show, but Mondays the shows on Broadway are all dark. Moulin Rouge has strong connections to Australia, as the creative team behind the musical and the very famous movie are all from the country. So go to Le Poisson Rouge and see the cast sing and carry on, which will be amazing.
