Broadway baby

Quick! Broadway tix are 2-for-1, buy them right now

Attention everyone in NYC and the Northeast U.S.: by the time you read this story, it might be too late, but there’s a bunch of theaters that are selling two tickets for the price of one, and they’re good seats.

Broadway Week (which is much longer than a week, running from Jan. 21 through Feb. 9, 2020) was designed to inject some energy into the post-Christmas lull in New York’s theater scene, when ticket sales are slightly slower than peak tourist seasons. Shows like Wicked, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, even the “preview” performances of the West Side Story 2020 revival, these are some of the hottest tickets in New York (with outrageous prices to match, hundreds of dollars for one ticket!), and they are all on sale.

Here’s how Broadway Week works: “Buy Now” tickets are the cheap seats, and when those sell out, “Buy With Upgrade” are slightly better seats, but have a $20 surcharge for each ticket. It’s still a great bargain. Clicking the link leads to the respective ticket sales site, Ticketmaster or Telecharge, with the discount code already embedded into the transaction. Pick a date and a theater section, and that’s it.

These really are some of the best plays and musicals on Broadway. Get tickets to The Inheritance, a play that follows three generations of gay men as they engage in lots of soul-searching and conflict, while exploring the meaning of life following the HIV/AIDS crisis; it poses questions about what the younger gays today owe to the older generations, who fought the big battles of equality and AIDS activism, but do the younger generations really need to care? This play is a big deal in New York, and is destined to win lots of awards.

There’s just one catch: The Inheritance is staged as two plays, which should be seen either the same day or over two days consecutively. Two plays is a lot to process, and the subject matter tends to leave audience members exhausted from the emotional turmoil and drama. Two plays are also expensive, especially a popular show like The Inheritance, so a 2-for-1 sale is a great chance to see it.

If gaymotional turmoil doesn’t seem like a fun time, there are also tickets available for shows like Frozen and The Lion King, which are delightful.

Finding low-cost Broadway tickets is like a sport, and there are lots of other ways to score a cheap seat. Broadway For Broke People has some recommendations, usually for “rush” tickets that can be bought the day of the show. The TodayTix app has good deals, and it is always fun going to the TKTS booths in Times Square, South Street Seaport, or Lincoln Center and seeing what is available the day of the show. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has a lottery for very cheap tickets each week, as does Hamilton. (Sadly, Hamilton is not part of the 2-for-1 sale.) It is also a good idea to look for tickets the old-fashioned way, by finding the website for the show and clicking the “buy tickets” link, because there are occasionally some inexpensive seats available directly from the theater.

Good luck and have fun at the shows! The 2020 Tony Award nominations will be announced April 28.
