Rosa Wiesn is one of the biggest gay parties you probably never knew existed

Who loves drunk guys in leather? There were tens of thousands of them at Rosa Wiesn, the big gay party at Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany.

Oktoberfest, held annually in (you guessed it) October, although it starts in September, is a party that runs for over two weeks and celebrates all things Bavaria, which is a cultural region in southern Germany. There are festive dances, crafts, and other socially significant offerings, but the majority of the 6 million people who crowd into the Oktoberfest tents are there just to drink liters—not pints, liters!—of really tasty German beer.

Rosa Wiesn is one of the premiere events of Oktoberfest, and there is a long story behind how this gay party got started, how it got the “Rosa Wiesn” name, and why it is so special. But all that aside, Rosa Wiesn really is just an excuse for gay menfolk to wear lederhosen (leather shorts with suspenders) and trachts (leather shorts without suspenders, and please feel free to email us if we got that wrong) and get absolutely wasted, while throwing their arms around each other and singing songs. And they really do sing! Watch this:

Besides being one of the singularly largest gay events on Earth,  Rosa Wiesn is also one of the happiest, with everyone hugging and singing all day. And with all of that leather, it is also probably one of the sweatiest, but that’s fine. Here are some more pics:

That guy has the nicest smile! Love that pic. Which is your favorite?

Fun fact: “I bin ogschdocha!” means “I am drunk!” but even sober people will have a hard time pronouncing “ogschdocha.”

Please send all complaints about our reductive/incorrect explanation about the difference between lederhosen vs. trachts to danrenzi@gaycities.com.
