Trying to explain the concept of Burning Man can be complicated: is it an art festival? In some ways, yes. Is it a party? Yes, but it means more than that. Is it hot and dusty out there in the desert? Of course it is.
Burning Man arises from the desert sand each year in northern Nevada, as a gathering of like-minded individuals who contributes something unique to the communal experience. Approximately 80,000 people attend Burning Man, and the experience has always had a strong gay and trans presence, as organiers promote a fully inclusive, free-love event.
Much of Burning Man’s mission is the art of self-expression, and that includes constructing sculptures and “art cars” to for attendees to contribute that self-expression to the communal experience, all culminating in the ritual burning of The Man (photo above) to signal the end of “The Burn.”
There is no way to authentically pick the “best” art installations from an event like Burning Man, so we picked our Top 10 favorites, plus a few extra of the people who added a little beauty of their own. Take a look at the art, the people, and the community of Burning Man 2019:
