Shade on the high seas! Chanteuse and star of TV show SMASH and Broadway musical Waitress Katharine McPhee was performing on a VACAYA cruise when she took the opportunity to respond to critics of her wedding with a man almost twice her age: “Go f*** yourself.”
McPhee, 35, married music mega-producer David Foster, 69, in June 2019, and McPhee has publicly discussed her desire for the couple to have children. Needless to say, their marriage and family plans have become bigger gossip than other celebrity couples with less of an age gap.

McPhee’s blunt, and entirely appropriate, statement was said in response to a comment from husband Foster, who was also on the cruise, and joined his lovely and talented wife on stage to play piano and sing a few songs. Foster paused the show to address the audience, and said “I don’t know if you noticed or not, but there’s a bit of an age difference between the two of us. But on this cruise, nobody gives a s***.”
The audiene, already worked into a breathless frenzy from McPhee’s performance—which was excellent—erupted in the applause of scandal-loving camarederie.

Let’s take moment to address something: for those who are blithely unaware of who he is, David Foster is one of the biggest names in the music business, having produced music for the likes of Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, Whitney Houston (he made the album for The Bodyguard!) and the list goes on and on. When he walked onto the stage on that cruise ship, it was truly the presence of musical royalty, as well as a testament to how much he loves his lovely and talented wife Katherine, considering he took the time to go on a cruise with her to support her career. That’s love.
McPhee performed with VACAYA as part of the inaugural voyage for the company, which organizes cruises and events catering to gay, lesbian, and trans guests. Besides her career as a powerhouse vocalist, McPhee has a long track record of publicly supporting issues such as marriage equality.
The McPhee-Foster stage scandal was just one more bit of excitement on what has turned into an eventful cruise. Previously, McPhee had joined Broadway living legend Kristin Chenoweth on stage (in another show) to sing the duet “For Good,” from the Broadway musical Wicked.
The VACAYA cruise is also notable for being the first cruise ship to dock overnight in Provincetown, Mass., on the first night of the Provincetown Carnival.
