Did you feel a shift in the cosmos last night? That wasn’t a bursting quasar, knocking our solar system askew. It was just the energy emitted from the critical mass of Kristin Chenoweth, singing showtunes, on a gay cruise filled with thousands of adoring fans. And she was wearing a rainbow sequined minidress designed by Michael Kors (photo, above).
Chenoweth, a star of stage (Tony Award for You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown) and screen (Emmy Award for Pushing Daisies), was aboard the inaugural voyage for cruises on VACAYA, a new vacation company that hosts the comprehensive range of gay, trans, and queercentric folk.
“These are my people!” Chenoweth exclaimed, with her arms outstretched at the shipful of passengers gathered on the pool deck and surrounding balconies. The crowd cheered vigorously but promptly fell silent with the first notes of the piano, and Chenoweth sang several songs including “Popular” and “For Good” from the musical Wicked, as she had starred in the original Broadway production as Glinda.
Reminding the audience several times that Wicked premiered on Broadway 15 years ago, and that she was still singing the songs in the original key—mad props to K-Chen for having some pipes—Chenoweth joined fellow chanteuse Katharine McPhee, who is also performing on the VACAYA cruise, for a stunning rendition of “For Good,” a duet. Because when you’re good, all you need is a piano and a stage. These two can sing.

The cruise will make stops in Canada and New England before docking in Provincetown, at the kickoff of the city’s Carnival celebration.
