Massive Golden Version of Michelangelo’s David To Roll Through NYC Tomorrow

New Yorker eyebrows aren’t generally easily raised, but a shimmering 30-foot naked gay icon rolling past on a lowboy truck could just do the trick tomorrow.

A golden double-sized recreation of Michelangelo’s classically homoerotic David sculpture will take a whirlwind tour of the city on Tuesday, as it makes its unlikely journey from Istanbul to Louisville.

Entitled David (inspired by Michelangelo), the huge statue is the work of Turkish artist Serkan Özkaya, and is en route to its new home at 21c, a unique hotel/contemporary art museum in Louisville, Kentucky.

While passing through Manhattan on Tuesday, the glittering David will roll by such landmarks as Times Square, Museum Mile and the High Line, before pulling up at 3pm to the Storefront for Art and Architecture in Nolita, where it will remain on display for several hours.

The sculpture was originally created for the 9th International Istanbul Biennial in 2005, but collapsed during its installation.
