This week, GayCities takes you beyond the museum and down the city’s alley ways and unexplored sidewalks for an insider’s look at the queer artists who’ve made San Francisco their ultimate canvas.
Artists can draw inspiration even from the tiniest items. For Pixelstud, Legos have a been a recurrent theme and medium. Thus his work brings out the playful aspect of San Francisco.
When asked what about the city inspired him, Pixelstud mentioned several neighborhoods including Polk Street (between California & Turk), the alleys of the Mission and the Tenderloin.
“The skyline as seen from the tippy top of Mission Dolores Park,” he told GayCities. “People watching intersections of 18th & Castro and 16th & Mission. The Castro Theater sign. The inside of Coit Tower.”
Pixelstud has placed silly, vibrant stickers all over the Castro. His stickers of pill bottles, squirrels, and Lego figures can be spotted (if you look carefully) on the parking lot entrance on Castro Street, between 17th & 18th, the northeast corner of Castro & 18th, the Castro plaza, the fire hydrant just outside Walgreen’s, Sanchez near Samovar Tea Lounge and the Castro MUNI station on the outbound sign.
His work is also currently on display at Bearbucks and Philz Coffee in the Castro. Keep an eye out as this prolific ‘stud continues to plaster the town with his pixelated work.
