International DJ’s The Freemasons on the White Party

The DJ duo The Freemasons are in London putting the final touches on their headlining set for the Palm Springs White Party in April. GayCities chatted with the internationally celebrated producers about what the view is like from the DJ booth.

Picture yourselves at the White Party. The sun is setting over the desert mountains. Thousand of people dancing outdoors to your set. It’s a long way from England. What will be going through your minds?

When things like this happen, smiles break out on our (slightly pale) English faces and we think to ourselves, life is good – we are lucky. If you ever talk to airline pilots they always say the most amazing thing about the job is the view. It’s kinda similar from a DJ booth. White Party has people and mountains.

You’ve worked with Beyonce, Whitney, Kylie. Your rolodex is a gay man’s pop fantasy. Do you have any interesting stories to share about working with these divas? What other acts are on your wish list?

We have to keep buying new note pads to extended our wish list and have finally decided to write the whole thing in pencil so we don’t have to keep crossing names out once we do get to work with them. The wonderful Alexis Jordan was on the list until her manager came into our studio with the parts to Good Girl. Katy Perry is firmly towards the top of the list, as is the incredible Alicia Keys. We would like to take a truck load of synths to a remote location with Lady Gaga and come up with a modern version of the electronic concept album like the Giorgio Moroder-produced Donna Summer works. Her voice is crying out for it, as is her writing.

As for stories–what goes in the studio stays in the studio. It’s a little like Las Vegas.

What can we expect to hear in your White Party set? Are there any new songs you’ll be premiering? Any old favorites that we should look out for?

You can expect a huge amount of fun. Socially we’ve been looking forward to this for months. It will be like seeing a whole bunch of old friends again. Musically, we will be going forward with a very decent nod backwards, too. Do listen carefully for our special bootlegs, crafted for just these kind of occasions, as well as some new mixes. In particular from UK’s most successful new act from 2010, Hurts. We will be playing a mix of their amazing song Better Than Love, now that it’s finally released.

Beautiful, young singer Yasmin (who at the tender age of 18 was touring as a DJ with Usher and Will.I.Am) asked us to remix her second single Finish Line. She’s really one to watch. The UK’s breeding some fab new talent.
