Gay Bar of the Week: First bar to exclusively stream women’s sports

GayCities’ new series “Gay Bar of the Week” showcases LGBTQ-friendly bars around the world that help bring our community together. These bars go above and beyond slinging drinks and dancing go-gos by making safe, inviting places with lasting impact.

Presenting this week’s pick:

The Sports Bra – Portland

The first-ever sports bar to exclusively stream women’s sports

They are brand new! Officially opened on April 1st, 2022. Go show them some love!

QUEER QUOTIENT- 4/6

The Sports Bra is an inclusive environment welcoming all sports lovers! The primary goal for owner & operator Jenny Nguyen is to bridge the stark divide in the world of sports viewing and to cultivate a space for everyone to enjoy.  This is a win for all LGBTQ+ folks who love watching games but not necessarily the environment that usually comes with it. Additionally, all female-identifying beauties can see themselves represented in an impactful and powerful environment. Because their focus is not only on creating a safe space for the underrepresented queer community but also on encouraging young women of all orientations to feel seen and strong, we give The Sports Bra a 4/6 on the Kinsey Scale of gayness.

VIBE CHECK – Cheerful, inclusive, and passionate

Upon entering the sparkly, fresh interior of The Sports Bra, you are immersed in a lively and family-friendly dining area with sleek hardwood floors and female sports heroes adorning every nook and cranny. The bar area feels like a classic sports pub with several large TVs mounted to the wall and a plentiful list of local craft beers written in chalk below. Even if you only planned to come for the game and some brews, the scents and dishes that emerge from the kitchen will have no trouble enticing you to indulge. From the lesbian rugby league to the family celebrating grandma’s 70th birthday, all are welcome here. Everyone is going to have a fantastic time!

SPECIALTY COCKTAIL – The Time Out

If you like sports even a little bit, you will love the names of every cocktail served here. The Time Out is a refreshing and exhilarating potion combining Espolón Blanco, hibiscus tea, lemon juice, simple syrup, and ginger juice.

BARTENDER’S CHOICE – Triple Axel

You absolutely must give this electric and vivacious concoction a try! The team at The Sports Bra created a cocktail that will knock your skates off by combining Gin, elderflower liqueur, a dash of fizzy water & grapefruit & lemon juice for pizzazz.

HANGOVER CURE – Aunt Tina’s Vienta-wings (GF, DF)

There are so many delicious choices on the Sports Bra’s menu, but we decided to spotlight these delectable beauties! Vietnamese-inspired flavors bring these showstoppers to the next level; fried chicken wings smothered in a sweet and tangy glaze served with fresh cabbage slaw and garnished with cilantro.

FUN FACT

Finally, a sports bar where non-carnivores can eat more than the celery sticks that come with the wings! With nearly half of their menu offering gluten & dairy-free options as well as many dishes being deliciously vegan/vegetarian, there will never be a question as to whether everyone will be able to enjoy a bite!

NOTEWORTHY EVENTS

They are open and ready to welcome you and your crew! Often offering daily themed drink specials, this could easily become your ‘go-to’ spot. Never be afraid to come in and ask if they can stream a certain team or specific game; their goal is to get as many women’s sports on their screens as possible!

If you’re on the hunt for a raunchier sports bar, we’ve got you covered!
