Queer lineup at Tribeca film fest

No one needs an excuse to hang out in New York City in the spring. But the Tribeca Film Festival in late April should add a little fire to your desire for the city in full bloom. This year’s festival features two quintessentially queer New York films, An Englishman in New York, which will make its North American premier and William Friedkin’s classic 1970 The Boys in the Band, about a group of bitchy gay men socializing together in the city. Englishman stars John Hurt as Quentin Crisp, the Village gender-bending dandy whose philosophy–“Be yourself no matter what they say”–spoke to generations.

At the same time Crisp and Boys in The Band exemplified a strain of self-loathing among gay men and lesbians that’s much harder to find today. Two other fine films, Kirby Dick’s documentary Outrage, about the outing of closeted politicians, and Lucia Puenzo’s The Fish Child, a lesbian love story set in Buenos Aires, offer far more positive takes on the culture of same-sex desire.
