Sam Smith was one of the performers at this year’s Sydney Mardi Gras afterparty on Saturday night… and it would be true to say they stole the show.

Appearing at Hordern Pavilion, Smith took to the stage in a giant red dress with the words ‘equality’ written across it. Smith sang their hit track ‘Promises’, and the crowd erupted when they were hoisted by wires into the air to show off the full size of their huge dress. Smith posted video footage to their Instagram.

In a social media message, Smith said, “I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. I’ve been shitting myself all day. I love you Sydney and I love being queer x”

It wasn’t Smith’s only routine. They also donned a white, netting ensemble, complete with a feather hat, to sing hit track, “How Do You Sleep”.

Smith not only performed at the afterparty but also marched and performed during the Mardi Gras parade earlier in the day. Smith joined around 12,600 other marchers for a parade watched by an estimated 300,000 on the streets and many thousands more at home on TV and over the internet.

Smith marched alongside the LGBTQ youth group, Twenty10. They weren’t the only celebrity to take part in the ‘What Matters’ themed parade. Singer Dua Lipa also took part in the march and performed at the afterparty, along with US singer Kesha. Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness was also on the streets for the event.

Afterward, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Chief Executive Albert Kruger enthused, “Last night was a dazzling display of diversity that brought together people from across the globe to celebrate what truly matters.

“In total there were 191 floats, representing a spectacular cross-section of the community and each bringing their own terrific twist to this year’s theme.

“This year we collectively reflected on a number of issues facing our community. From LGBTQI homelessness to the Australian bushfires and climate change, many of this year’s floats had a distinct point of view on the issues that matter most.

“And of course, having Sam Smith and Dua Lipa join us on the parade route was a fittingly glittering finale to a truly unforgettable night.”
