jjkeyes-76aa55The big apple is, well, big. Very, very big. So keeping our guide to the city updated makes us here at GayCities a little dizzy. Not only does Manhattan boast at least three thriving gay ‘hoods–and hundreds of queer-friendly venues–but gay life has rapidly taken root in the city’s five boroughs, home to some of the most racially and ethnically diverse communities in the world.

Fortunately our friend, the travel writer Jeffrey James Keyes, is anything but dizzy. He’s one smart cookie. So we were thrilled when JJ agreed to not only update the New York guide but to add several new categories to our existing listings, including shopping, gyms/saunas, cultural institutions–with even a few sex clubs thrown in for good measure.

We met Jeffrey on a recent trip to London, which he chronicled for Instinct magazine. Jeffrey is much more than a travel journalist, and contributor to the book Italy from a Backpack. He’s also an accomplished playwright and photographer. When he isn’t traveling the world, writing plays and finishing his MFA in writing at Columbia University’s School of the Arts, he lives in Washington Heights with his boyfriend and  Kylie, the couple’s Shiba Inu.

As usual, don’t be afraid to let us know how to keep improving our guides. Be nice, be brutal…
