Where the sun doesn’t shine in South Beach

City of Sin?
City of Sin?

Gay scribe Steven Gaines takes a swipe at the stereotype of  South Beach social life: “It seems everybody is 21,” he tells The Miami Herald. “Everybody wanted to have dinner at 10. And I’m no stranger to drugs. I’m a gay man who grew up in New York City. But I never saw people so dependent on drugs as part of the culture.”

Gaines is taking heat from locals for his somewhat lurid depiction of the social scene in Fool’s Paradise: Players, Poseurs and the Culture of Excess in South Beach. While Gaines’ take is surely hyperbole-social pursuits there are as diverse as the population–remarks like that will no doubt have the intended effect: sell lots of books.
