Nautical Nuptials

Couple says “I do” while surrounded by icebergs in Antarctica

Star of HGTV’s Dream Home, Brian Patrick Flynn, and his partner of 10 years, Hollis Smith, tied the knot in the most unusual of places: the iceberg-filled Lemaire Channel of Antarctica. While on a cruise, the boys took a private detour to say, “I do.”

Brian, who planned the adventure, had been dreaming of visiting Antarctica since childhood. The cruise was originally booked to celebrate his 40th birthday.

“About three months after paying for it, I started to think that we should get married,” Brian told Harper’s Bazaar. “I said to him randomly, ‘how do you feel about us getting married in Antarctica?’” And that was the romantic proposal.

The low-maintenance ceremony was perfect for them considering both guys work in Hollywood. (Hollis works in costume design for television shows, including The Walking Dead.) The couple admitted they didn’t want to “deal with venues, guest lists, and overall project management.”

On a Zodiac atop an ice floe, the nuptials were witnessed by only four guests: three polar experts and the expedition leader who officiated.

The couple, who live in Atlanta, didn’t publicize to the other 60 or so travelers that they were getting married. But according to Harper’s Bazaar, upon returning to the ship, they learned that the staff had baked a cake just for them.

“The most beautiful thing to us was when they brought the cake out, the passengers realized it was for a wedding between two men,” Brian said. “Many of them started crying and coming over—we didn’t want the attention, but they supported us fully.”

Their journey began in Chile, where they explored Torres del Paine in the Patagonia region, reported Harper’s Bazaar. From there, they flew to Punta Arenas in Chile’s southernmost region. For the last leg of their trip, they took a two-hour flight to King George Island for the eight-day voyage at sea that would become the backdrop of their special day.
