PHOTOS: Going Dutch: The Canals Come Alive For Amsterdam Pride

01

Some 300,000 people from the Netherlands and around the world lined the gorgeous canals of Amsterdam over the weekend for its annual Pride Parade, the planet’s best known waterborne LGBT procession.

The highlight of a full week of Pride events in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam’s Saturday parade is beloved by locals of all proclivities, who don pink, drink liberally, and cheer on the 80 floating barges throughout the afternoon.

This year’s parade was the first to include a float of professional soccer players in support of LGBT rights. Many on the floats and in the crowd also sported signs and clothing condemning the Russian government’s anti-gay policies.

Following the parade, Amsterdam’s gay ‘hoods along Reguliersdwarsstraat and Zeedijk filled to capacity with street parties lasting well into the wee hours.

The weekend also included the wildly popular Friday night Drag Queen Olympics, which features such nail-biting heats as the Stiletto Sprint and the Handbag Discus.
