Wild Adventure Travel On The Island Paradise Of Curaçao

If you’re heading to Curaçao for the Get Wet Weekend you’ll have plenty of things to do at night, but be sure to carve out some time in the daylight hours: Curaçao is definitely a place for adventure, and we’ve picked three of our favorite opportunities to step out of your element and experience the unique things the island paradise is known for.

1. Dive, Dive, Dive

If you’re into diving you’ve hit the jackpot: The island has some 65 diving sites, including an airplane wreck, a Lost Anchor, Lover’s Beach, Sponge Forest and a sunken tugboat. New to diving? Curaçao is known for its expert facilities and instructors. But if diving’s not your thing, you can still grab a snorkel and some flippers and just explore beautiful coral and  marine life or a few cuties closer to shore.

2. Caving

Close to the airport on the north side of the island, The Hato Caves are more than 200,000 years old and part of a larger park that’s one of the most beautiful and mysterious spots on the island. Home to awe-inspiring limestone formations, the caves were once home to the Amerindian Arawaks, who  left cave drawings which are still  visible some 1,500 years later.

There’s something oddly romantic about going on the Hato Cave tour with someone you love. Steal a kiss below the stalactites but don’t lag behind your group—you don’t want to miss the amazing cave drawings and rock formations (like the fabulous Madonna statue). But If things get dark or you get a chill up your spine it’s okay to hold hands with your significant other.

3.  All-Terrain Vehicle Adventure

I initially hesitated about going on Eric’s ATV Adventure but minutes into the trip I was so glad I did. Our guide took us on a spectacular off-the-beaten-path tour of the island. Over three-and-a-half hours, your wild ride will visit an ostrich farm, spooky caves, Playa Kanoa beach and even an aloe vera plantation. (Over the Get Wet Weekend there will definitely be other boys on your tour, so get ready to make friends.) There’s so much to take in, I recommend scheduling an early tour, but an afternoon jaunt will allow you to ride off into the sunset.
