THEATER: Lesbian Drama Emerges At The New York Fringe Festival

We recently highlighted the gay goodies awaiting theatergoers at New York International Fringe Festival , one of the biggest theater fests in the world. Now we’re giving a shout out to the girls. Here’s a peek at some of the Sapphic dramas hitting the boards at Fringe NYC August 10 to 28.

June and Nancy

This story, about a 1950s housewife falling in love with another woman, sounds a little like  Far From Heaven. But in this drama, the choice between passion and family responsibility is even tougher. Expect lots of sexual tension and repressed feelings bubbling to the surface.

5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche

Mid-century lesbians are all the rage at this year’s Fringe. Set in 1956, Quiche centers on five women from the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein (wink, wink). As they host their annual breakfast, the lady-loving lasses discuss the politics of the day, including the threat of Communists taking over their perfect little town. Anti-Red lesbians scarfing quiche in small-town America? We’ll take a slice!

Fortunate Daughter

Solo artist Thao P. Nguyen explores the obligations foisted upon her by her various “families”: Her traditional parents and relatives want her find a nice man to marry. And her gay friends and coworkers want her to come out to her folks. What’s a gal-loving, Vietnamese performance artist to do? Talk about it in a one-woman show in the Fringe, of course!
