It’s never good news when an LGBT newspaper goes out of business, especially when its a 28-year-old institution like Portland, Oregon’s Just Out, which has ceased publication after releasing its December issue.
Publisher Marty Davis announced on the paper’s website: .
“Effective December 26, 2011, Just Out newsmagazine, serving Portland’s LGBTQ community since 1983, is no longer in business. Three years of recession have taken their toll. Please direct all inquiries to Marty Davis at marty@justout.com. Thank you for your many years of readership and support.”
The bimonthly paper was founded by Jay Brown and Renee LaChance in 1983 and has featured notable writers including Marc Acito, Peter Zuckerman and Andy Mangels. It was originally available for free in many of Oregon’s metropolitan areas, but economic hardship downsized distribution in recent years to just Portland, with one drop box each in Eugene and Salem.
“So sad to hear this news—yet another significant loss for those attempting to do good work in these challenging times,” posted one commenter on the Just Out site. “I look forward to the reincarnation, Marty, in whatever form your good intentions manifest. There is no death of good intentions and good works—only the temporary transformations.”
