A new gay coffee company called (drum roll, please) Gay Coffee is making its debut at the Castro Street Fair on Sunday.
The Java Jane behind the business, Melissa Krueger, is rolling out five different blends—Red Hanky Blend, Weekend Pass, Moving In, Good Morning Mary and Stone Butch Breakfast Blend—and will have a photo booth at the fair so attendees can get their picture taken and possibly appear on labels for new roasts.
Krueger has serious coffee credentials, too: She worked the grind at coffee houses throughout college and opened the Elbow Room near Smith College in Northhampton, MA, in 2004. With her partner, Mary, Krueger has traveled to Nicaragua “to meet coffee growers and hear their stories,” as she says. Started this year, Gay Coffee is a niche-market roaster, with high-quality organic beans sourced from Royal Coffee.
And while its branding is clearly lighthearted, it’s definitely not a joke: “I want to take civil rights history and put it on people’s counters,” says Krueger. “It’s not a kitsch thing.” One percent of profits are donated to the LGBT Task Force.
