Yesterday was the final day to catch “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” at the Metropolitan Museum and, as predicted, the show was one of the most successful ever for the Upper East Side cultural institution—drawing more than 650,000 visitors, with numbers for the final days reaching 6,000.
“We haven’t seen the likes of those lines since the Mona Lisa was here in 1963,” a Met spokeswoman said.
To accommodate the crowds—which reached into nearby Central P
ark—the museum stayed open till midnight for the first time in its history. “We have created these late hours to satisfy the unprecedented interest in this landmark retrospective,” said Met director Thomas Campbell. “Visitors from across the globe have come to see this remarkable exhibition, and we want to keep it open for as many people as possible.”
Having seen the show some months ago, we can say it’s truly a masterpiece—in curatorial design, in spotlighting McQueen’s exquisite tailoring and in putting his fanciful themes in context. No wonder there’s a petition circulating to make Savage Beauty a traveling show.
