From a little corner bar, it has grown into quite an institution. A lot of the same people that go to the Hippo go to Grand Central because they are catty corner from each other. They have more sections than the Hippo. Right now they have a lesbian bar upstairs.
My favorite crab cakes
It's a cafe/restauant, it's ample, there's always a place to sit, never have to wait. They have outside seating which is nice in the summer. Very good for hamburgers and they have my favorite crab cakes in Mt. Vernon.
A very interesting and very baltimore cafe
It's an anarchist cafe and they probably have the best bagels in baltimore and a fantastic bookstore with a queer section. Books on all kinds of topics everything having to do with alternative culture, politics, radical theory, art, pop culture, etc It's a very cool place, very friendly, great place to go for breakfast. They have big tables so it's great to meet people and it is completely an open minded sort of place.
For a more formal or potentially romantic evening
Very beautiful inside, they have high ceilings and large scale original artwork hanging. A lot of times they have live music. It has a very modern menu without being nouvelle cusisine. The portions are reasonable, all their grilled stuff is terrific. It's a more intimate atmosphere but very unpretentious at the same time.
Quirky, fun and affordable
Very mixed clientele with a very good traditional menu that specializes in Ribs. I like it because it's lively and fun, the service is good and it's a good place to go with 1 friend or 10 friends. A fun, casual place to go.
This cafe is a very friendly, luminous cafe that serves all kinds of coffee as well as food, breakfast, lunch and dinner and the food is all Italian inspired. They are praised for their salads, sandwiches and their pastas.
