From Montana to Hong Kong, Kenya to Maine, artist Joey DeRuy has adapted to his surroundings and absorbed a wide array of influences. An artist since childhood as well as a fashion model, his illustrative, abstract paintings often deal with the equally rational and irrational world we live in. Born in the late 70s to American philan-thropists in Africa, Joey has had many influences spanning the gamut of modern art and portraiture. As a young child, his fascination with life in all aspects, as well as his natural talent, led him to expressing himself in conventional mediums including the pencil and paper, as well as tutelage under well-known artists like Patty Rambo during his early teens. At the age of 11, Joey was featured in his first art show at the Capitol Hill Mall in Helena, MT. He has since explored other eclectic avenues including tattoo art, illustration and design, and has eventually evolved into his current passionâmixed-media, fine art painting. His inspirations in pen and ink have taken him down many avenues from tattoo art to ad illustrations with international magazine recognitions. He has since expanded into oils, acrylics and mixed media. âI love mixed media!â Joey explains, âWhen I was broke, I would use nail polish, glue, whatever was around to forge my ideas.â Joey's painting roots were with encaustic powder mixed with beeswax, which represents one of the oldest painting media, and stems from his youth spent in East Africa. He's worked with many materials, including pen and ink, graphite, as well as flower petals, plants and ashes on the canvas. Joeyâs work can also be found gracing the pages of magazines such as O and InStyle in partnership with candle maker, Jimmy Belasco. Joey designed thirteen of the candle designers decorative candle sleeves as part of the vendors âArtist Seriesâ. His candle illustrations have been sold through many retailers around the world. Joeyâs work has attracted many private collectors, including Andy McDowell, the B52âs Kate Pierson, Joel Baird, Chris Jigger and Dallas Mayor Laura Miller. In San Francisco, his art is on view at such businesses as Nirvana Restaurant San Francisco and famed furniture retailer, Roche Bobois-San Francisco. His artwork can also be experienced at the Dallas Texas Chamber of Commerce Visitors and Convention Bureau. Joey is also available for commissioned work. After six years living and working in Dallas, Joey now resides in San Francisco.
