South Beach Bar/Club in Houston
Posted: October 12, 2006
South Beach is a must see! The busiest gay dance bar in Houston and probably the nicest dance bar in Texas! Most people have not been to another club this nice and full of technology. If you are looking to dance, hear great music, see hot guys, and feel like you are the star...This is your place. Awesome!
NOW STRAIGHT - Rich's Bar/Club in Houston

Used to be the place to be in the 80's and 90's. It has switched ownership a few times and concepts many times. They have tried to remodel it but never a total overhaul. Kind of like Trading Spaces came in with a small budget and tried to hide her age. South Beach makes this place look old and worn out! They continue to try and make this place work but this horse is beat! A warehouse type dance club that has seen it's hayday come and go. Skip it, South Beach is way better and in the heart of Montrose.
Montrose Mining Company Bar/Club in Houston

Let me explain the title...When I say dirty, I mean it in two ways. This bar is very popular among the 35+ bear crowd. It is a Levi / Leather bar. Dirty, in the fact that you should not touch anything in the building. The bathrooms have to be a health code violation. Dirty, meaning public displays happen here. Again, it is popular and normally busy. The music is good, the drinks are strong but sometimes the odor is too. If you have extra time, check it out but do not make it a must see.
EJ's Bar/Club in Houston

The title says it all. This bar has unique patios and several bar serving areas. It is not really a dance club because the dance floor looks like you were at a high school dance. Poles in the middle of the floor, a lighting system that looks like it was purchased in 1981, and people walking through to another part of the bar. This bar is known for street hustlers / wanna be strippers and drag queens that can't get jobs anywhere else. If you are looking to spend a little money to touch hustler guys, this is your place. Nothing wrong with what goes on here but definetly not your upscale or trendy bar.

The title says it all. Yes, there are bars that are more frequented by lesbians, gay men, Latino's, coutnry folks, and other groups. This bar is frequented mainly by African Americans. Some people may not like me describing it in those terms but it is absolutely the truth. I have been there twice with my friends but I was one of the only white guys there. I was very out of place and the clientele let me know it by their looks. It is not very modern and looks to be thrown together anyway. Bars in the Montrose area have a mixture of races. This bar does not.

The only country, gay, dance bar in Houston. It is not in Montrose and you will have to drive there. The building is old and smells like a nursing home. The crowd is ok. Mainly, older country folks but every now and then some cuties. It is not like the other gay country bars in Austin or Dallas. If you are looking for a country night, it is really your only choice but definetly not a bar to plan your night to. It needs major updating and the dance floor is hardly a dance floor.

This bar is clean, well decorated, and new. The location is new but the name has been around several years. It is 5 minutes from the heart of Montrose but worth the time away from the gay ghetto. Not a dance club but a nice, energetic bar for lounging. Good job! Its good to see that a bar can survive outside of the interior of Montrose.
JR's Bar/Club in Houston

FYI..If you are from out of town, JR's is a must. It is the busiest gay bar in Houston if not the entire state of Texas. It is a staple in gay Texas life. It is in the heart of Montrose and in walking distance to most other gay bars. Make your own judgements but if it were not a fun place it would not still be here after 20 plus years. Could use some updating but overall, this is the bar to see the most variety of eye candy.
Halo Bar Bar/Club in Houston

A friend and I left Houston to see a Houston "celebrity" perform at Halo. We went to see Christina Ross hit the stage. It was a last minute decision but a very good one to say the least. Halo, is very nice with lots of cute aggie boys. It only cost $45 for both of us and we defintely put the drinks away. This bar surprised us totally. It was very spacious but full of people having a great time. Very well decorated, extremely clean, and it had everything you'd expect to see in a club in Montrose but the attitude! Did I tell you about the aggie boys? See the boys and the club for youself. The drive is easy and you will be glad once you get inside of Halo!
