Out on the town: A Waterpolo player’s Copenhagen

GayCities Copenhagen editor Paul Brummitt, doing double duty all week as an announcer at World Outgames swimming competition, met up with 28-year old graphic designer Morten, a star waterpolo player, to get the inside scoop on his hometown, Copenhagen and all things aqua. Despite not having even played waterpolo until last September, Morten is now captain of the Copenhagen Mermates team.

PB: What made you take up waterpolo?

It was at the Eurogames in Barcelona, where I made contact with other gay waterpolo teams. They helped make up my mind and we quickly got a diverse group of gay and lesbian players together – and a straight coach!

PB: How do you think you’ll do at Outgames?

We want to win of course, but realistically we’re up against some amazingly good teams. We gonna have lots of fun though–in and out of the water.

PB: So where will we be able to find you – which places do you recommend?

I like Hotel Skt. Petri, Café Petri or K Bar for their cocktails or Masken for my favorite, “skinny tonic.” If it gets late I move across the road to Cosy Bar, which is open until well after dawn.

mortenPB: What about during the day?

Well I’ve spent the past three months doing the layout for all the sports program leaflets for Outgames, so I’ve been in Oscar a lot, as it’s right next to the Outgames office. It has tables where you can sit out in the sun, get a bite to eat and relax watching the world go by. In the evening they have a DJ so you can start your night there before moving on somewhere else, like Rocco.

PB: What do you like best about living here?

The fact that it’s not Esbjerg, 200 miles away on the west coast, where I come from! Seriously though, it’s just so open and friendly here, people are free to be themselves. Come and see how gay-friendly Copenhagen is. And with the World Outgames it’s a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, especially a city that’s relatively small size compared to places like London or Paris. You can do the whole town up in a week.
