Mapping marriage equality: New Hampshire makes six

June 3, 2009 / No Comments

The reshuffling of the LGBT travel map in America continued apace when Gov. John Lynch, a Democrat, signed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in New Hampshire, beginning Jan. 1. “We are standing up for the liberties of same-sex couples by making clear that they will receive the same rights, responsibilities — and respect — under New Hampshire law,” Lynch announced, as throngs of marriage equality supporters cheered outside the state building in Concord.

New Hampshire now joins Iowa, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont in blessing same-sex unions. Since gay rights legislation first took off in New England states, back in the ’80s, it’s not a particularly surprising development. The question is: how long will it take other states–including California–to realize  that New Hampshire’s gain is their loss?
