Dispatch Cologne: GayGames get under way

GayCities Europe editor Paul Brummitt is at the GayGames in Cologne, where he’s competing in the triathlon and blogging and photographing all week. This is his first dispatch.

You can already feel the anticipation in the air here in the Cathedral Metropolis on the Rhine.

Even though the city always has a very visible gay presence, you can tell something extra special’s taking place now. It’s the main arrival day for athletes so everyone has time to primp for tomorrow night’s Opening Ceremony at Rheinenergie Stadium. The weather’s overcast but spirits haven’t been dampened, although outfits may get a bit wet during the ceremony, according to local forcasts.

My team, the Copenhagen Mermates, were one of the first to check in having arrived on the overnight sleeper train. Some of us are staying at a great hotel, Hotel Lasthaus Am-Ring, and I captured these water polo guys at GayGames registration this morning, a little bleary from the trip but no worse for the wear.

Good luck with your balls in the pool, boys!
