Iceland’s warm embrace

Tjorn Pond, Reykjavik

Iceland is a tourist paradise, boasting icey-beautiful wilderness and the warm welcome of gay-friendly Reykjavik, all at reasonable prices. But now there’s another great reason to check out the largely undiscovered nation. In late January open lesbian Johanna Sigurdardottir, 66, was named interim prime minister. Siguradardottir, labor activist and former flight attendant, faces quite a challenge on the economic front: Iceland received a $10 billion bailout after the country’s banks collapsed last fall.

Want to help jump-start the country’s economy while showing your support for Siguradardottir? Act fast. Elections are scheduled for May, and the lesbian leader’s liberal Social Democratic Alliance trails the Left-Green movement in opinion polls.

Yes the Iceland, and the newly elected lesbian leader. I have wondered why no one has thought of any kind of jokes?
