“G.B.F.,” Gore Vidal, Moms Mabley And More Queer Goings On At Tribeca

The schedule for the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival is out, and there’s quite a few things queer filmgoers will want to keep an eye out for.

In G.B.F (Gay Best Friend), the latest from Jawbreaker director Darren Stein and screenwriter George Northy, a teen boy discovers being openly gay is the key to popularity—or is it?  The film (above) makes its world debut at Tribeca and stars Paul Iacono (The Hard Times of RJ Berger), Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars), Andrea Bowen (Desperate Housewives), Molly Tarlov (Awkward), Horatio Sanz, Rebecca Gayheart, Megan Mullally and Natasha Lyonne..

The gay man of letters is the subject of Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia, which blends commentary from Vidal himself with archival footage of some of his most infamous appearances.

Whoopi Goldberg directs I Got Somethin’ to Tell You, a revelatory look at queer Blues legend Moms Mabley, who elizabeth-taylor-aids-amfarpunctured divides of race, gender and sexuality with her raw comedy in the 1920s and ’30s.

Celluloid Closet collaborators Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman bring us The Battle of amfAR, a look at how Elizabeth Taylor and Dr. Mathilde Krim (right)teamed up to create the country’s first dedicated AIDS research foundation.  Krim, Taylor’s daughter-in-law Aileen Getty, amfAR CEO Kevin Robert Frost and global-health  activist Regan Hofmann will attend a Q&A after the screening.

Some oddly lighter fare: In the Taiwanese comedy Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?, a straight-laced married man is tempted back into the gay life by the unexpected arrival of an old flame. Check out the trailer below.

The 2o13 Tribeca Film Festival runs April 17-28 in New York City
