Gay theater veteran Del Shores (Sordid Lives, Southern Baptist Sissies) is co-producing a new queer comedy, The Boomerang Effect. The show, written by young playwright Matthew Leavitt, opens March 24 at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles, with a monthlong run ending April 29.
According to its press release, the play focuses on several couples—including one married same-sex pair—and their particular dysfunctions. The tagline reads: “Five bedrooms. Five couples. One gay marriage faces the ultimate test in this new comedy that peeks under the covers.”

The Boomerang Effect is essentially a fancy academic term for describing cause-and-effect, but what particularly fascinated me about the principle was how various fields of study and professions adopt it in very different ways. The concept of one single principle being utilized so differently by so many different fields made me think about the play’s five couples, and the universal complications in their sexual relationships despite the differences in scenario and detail. But really, it’s a comedy about sex.
Leavitt’s first work, Losers and Fools, was a semifinalist in Stephen Sondheim’s Young Playwrights Festival. He has also directed his own adaptations of Twelfth Night, The Taming of the Shrew, The Tempest and other Shakespearean comedies.
