Stiff Competition in Best of GayCities 2011—And A Possible Shocking Upset

Forget the Iowa caucuses—with just one day to go in the Best of GayCities, 2011, at least one major surprise upset in the voting is unfolding, while in many categories, the competition is still fiercely neck and neck.

In fact, only two towns show commanding leads in any category right now, one being perennial gay fave New York City, which is running away from the pack with a full third of all votes in both the Best Nightlife City and Best Dressed City fields.

But in what could prove to be a huge upset, NYC is actually currently placing second in the overall Best City of 2011 category with just 17% of the votes, while plucky Tel Aviv heads way out in front with 29%.

Some races are just too close to call: In the Best Resort Town category, Provincetown, Palm Springs, and Sitges are running in a near three-way tie, garnering 28%, 24% and 20% of the ballots respectively.

In the Best Sand & Sun City category, things are even closer: Sydney currently leads with 26%, but both Key West (21%) and Puerta Vallarta (20%) are hot on its heels.

Things are also very close in the Best Settle Down City category, with Seattle leading Fort Lauderdale by just a 4% margin, 25% to 21%.

Other current leaders include San Francisco for Best Pride City, Paris for Best Food City and Buffalo for Best Up & Coming City.

One other surprise, and one that clearly indicates heavy voting from Tel Aviv fans: Aside from its commanding lead at the Best City overall, the Israeli gay capital has also registered sizable write-in percentages in a whopping four categories for which it wasn’t even nominated: Best Nightlife City, Best Pride City, Best Food City, and Best Sand & Sun City.

There’s still time to make sure your favorite wins. But vote now at Best of GayCities 2011—tomorrow at midnight, PST, it’s all over but for the crying!
