South Carolina pulls gay tourism ad campaign

July 14, 2008 / 4 Comments

For this year’s London Pride, a UK based travel website ran an ad campaign using posters throughout the London Metro touting US cities as gay friendly locations. The posters read “Atlanta is so gay, Las Vegas is so gay”, etc.

Well, the folks in South Carolina’s government caught wind that someone in SC government approved of the campaign and even paid a fee to participate. Now, the anti-gay politicians are hopping mad and have pulled the support.

From news site The State:

The agency is reviewing how, if at all, to discipline the employees who signed off on the program. Some lawmakers were shocked to learn about the campaign, with state Sen. David Thomas, R-Greenville, calling for an audit. Joel Sawyer, spokesman for Gov. Mark Sanford, said using tax money to support a social or political agenda is inappropriate.

South Carolina is bucking the trend as many states and city tourism offices have recognized the value of the gay dollar. You might think twice about that trip to Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach this summer.

Spent several days in Charleston last Fall, hit a couple of Gay bars. Found the
town to be quite Gay-friendly. But was hardly there long enough to really see how the so-called mainstream people felt.
