We learned from Metroblogger Queequeg that beloved Los Angeles lesbian haven The Normandie Room is closing its doors early next week. Apparently a long-term construction project outside the bar on Santa Monica Blvd.–plus the recession’s squeeze–is forcing the neighborhood haunt to shutter. Bars open and close all the time, but it’s a shame that one of the few lesbian gathering spots in West Hollywood (home to dozens of gay male watering holes) will be no more.
The tenant-to-be: A west coast version of popular New York gay bar Gym. The Chelsea hangout boasts the title of New York’s only gay sports bar, and hopes to find the same success with LA’s queer sports jocks and fans.
