Favorite City: Gay Paree

Harriet, we hear your birthday’s coming up. Where’s the big party?
I know! So exciting right! Gotham Comedy Club in the main room.

Gotham’s a cool place, isn’t it? I love Gotham. It’s a beautiful clean room, the food is great, the drinks are great, the service is great with nice clean bathrooms. Most comedy clubs are dumps that haven’t been cleaned since 1988 when George Lopez was cleaning (with his tongue).

Haha. How about your show? How did you come up with the title Harriet Halloway Presents: Waiting to Inhale?
Well one of guiltiest pleasures is the movie “Waiting to Exhale” based on the novel by Terry Macmillin about four women looking for love. Decided to do a show with four comedians looking for weed.

What do you want for your birthday?
Some dick

You’re hysterical
Awww thanks puddin!

Didn’t you used to be a burlesque performer? How’d you get into that scene? I was 15 and very naughty. My really good friend Daniel Nardicio (a very big gay promoter now) got me up on stage and twirling tassles! He should be put in jail!

Favorite burlesque acts?
Dirty Martini, Julie Atlas Muse, World Famous *BOB*, and Amber Ray! LOVE THEM!

Where can we go to see the best burlesque performers these days?
Your mom’s house.

What should anyone who hasn’t been to a Harriet Halloway show expect?
It’s a guaranteed good time. And you don’t need penicillin after.

Where should we get dinner before your show?
R.U.B. right next store. (It’s not a massage parlor you pig! It’s a restaurant!) Or eat at the club–it’s delish.

And for drinks after?
Come have a drink with me next door at Jakes Saloon. It’s my birthday for Christs sake.

Did any comedians inspired you early on?
I’ve always been super inspired by Lucille Ball, Carol Burnette and Goldie. My icons and brilliant comediennes.

You used to work at the Hole, right? What was that like?
It was fun, it was mixed, it was rock and roll! Those were the days.

Favorite NYC gay bar right now?
I’ve been known to stroll into Eastern Bloc for a drink with the girls….

Gotham aside, where else can we go to laugh?
Take a look in the mirror

Weren’t you in The Scissor Sisters Filthy Gorgeous video?
That was a lot of fun. I remember wearing blue eyeshadow and underwear and drinking a lot of vodka cranberry’s that day. Wait. That’s every day. Guess it wasn’t as memorable as I thought.

And the Louisiana Conversation is coming up. What’s the film about?
OOOOH, it’s so scary and f’ed up. It’s about lesbian vampires searching for love and acceptance in this dark scary city called New York. Can’t WAIT for it to hit theaters.
