Rebel Brings Late Night to Lower Castro ‘Hood

This weeks grand opening of Rebel brought the trendy Castro adjacent district, “Deco Ghetto,” to life. The club is latest incarnation of the former “Triple Crown,” transforming the cavernous space into a campy masculine playground replete with Harley’s, 4am after-hours and Jameson on tap.

Rebel is right on concept for a new project from the guys behind Mission hotspot, Truck, and its after-hours permit could make it a destination, especially since you can practically roll down Market Street after the regular Castro haunts close down at 2am.

The Deco Ghetto is ripe with great places for your gay-night-out, all within steps of the SF LGBT Center. From the tried-and-true Martuni’s, where fishbowl-sized martini’s make everyone a piano bar star, to the divey Buck Tavern, where the new owner is the rambunctiously radical politician Chris Daly, there really is a place for every taste. Up Market a few blocks, Bar on Church is set to reopen under new ownership and a new concept.

Perhaps the best part of the neighborhood is the dining. Deco Ghetto is home to the world renowned Zuni Cafe, where people wait hours for the salted chicken dinner. There is also first-rate South American fair at Pisco and Destino, crave-inducing Brazilian steakhouse Espetus, and the ever popular Sushi Zone, where die-hards jockey to access on of the restaurants three tables.

If shopping is your thing, the neighborhood is dubbed for its Deco-era home furnishing emporiums. So unless you are redecorating, focus on Hayes Valley to the north or the Mission to the south. If you just must get decked out in cool duds for your night out check out the brand new gay fave Nice Collective Mobile Supply Unit at Church and Market. If NC is budget busting, try Crossroads Trading Company for recycled retro fashions, located practically next door.

Oh, and don’t forget the boys. They are spotted everywhere, from a window table at Zuni to crooning show tunes at Martuni’s piano. In fact, there is plenty reason to believe that this might be the perfect ‘hood for your Saturday night.

As if you needed more proof, these hot shots from local promoter Joshua J’s latest party, Stallion at Rebel, seal the deal.
