My partner and I are looking at visiting DC over the labor day weekend. We would love good tips and advice from folks that know.

Where will youall be staying? Depending on what you are looking for, as far as gay bars & restaurants go, just get in a cab & tell them to drop you off anywhere along 17th St. NW. Annie's Steak House is always a good place for dinner. Also, a block over on 18th St. NW, there is a place called Lauriel Plaza that is good food & fun . . . if you are up for Mexican. If you want to get gussied-up & check out some 5 star restaurants, check out The Palm or Sam & Harry's (both on 19th St. NW.
Back to the bar scene . . . in my opinion, I would advise you to avoid a dive called "J.R.'s" on 17th St. NW. (It caters to the cute, mindless 20 or 30 somethings with no personality & attitudes bigger than they are.) You will also hear of a place called The Eagle (on NY Ave) It is, of course, a "leather & levys" type place, but not the most "interesting" crowd & also in a dangerous area even though there is a police station less than 2 blocks away.
If you are looking forward to checking out the museums, & haven't been to DC to do this before, I always send first - timers to the Smithsonians Air & Space Museum first. After that I like the Museum of National History (it has Hollywood memorabillia & it has The Hall of First Ladies which is an exhibit of statues of all first ladies wearing their Inaugral Ball gowns)
The Holocaust Memorisl Museum is by ticket only. It is quite somber but a must see. Also, some of the more new things to see & do in DC would be Madame Tussauds which is in the SE section of DC (the most notoriously "un-safe" section of DC, so make sure you are out of there before dark. Also, you might like the Spy Museum which is in NW part of DC & close to some nice (not too expensive places to eat.
As far as the monuments go, I always send visitors to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (one of the most somber of the memorials). It is directly across from the Lincoln Memorial. The Capital Building is impressive. The view from the Washington Monument is always impressive.
Remember one thing, post 9/11 DC has security check points A L L over the place! when you are going out to check out the museums & monuments, don't carry back packs, etc. If you are driving & go anywhere on Capital Hill, you will surely see check points.
Shopping . . . there is lots of "world class" shopping in & around DC. You will see everything from Neiman Marcus & Brooks Brothers & Saks to Macys, Nordstrom, Hermes, Bloomingdales, Lord & Taylor, and Burberrys.
You can always find something to do in DC, any time of the year. However, the time of year you are going to be here is always hot & humid.
I believe Tripper hit all the great spots and safe ones too! Right now Washington is the place to be if you can get a place to stay! Obama the 20th.
