  1. Any suggestions for a straight dad and an 18 year old gay son in Manhattan on a sunday afternoon?

Particularly interested in village chelsea recommendations. No witty answers, please.

  3. What a sweet post, especially since it's the gay kids who usually have to introduce parents to the fact that gay life is good, not the other way around. i lived in nyc for a few years, so i have some ideas. chelsea is a great hood, with many cool bars and clubs. but since your son is underage, you can always try coffeehouses, which are bigger in the west village than in chelsea. there is one place you MUST see. the gay land lesbian community center on 6th avenue and west 13th street: http://newyork.gaycities.com/organizations/225038-the-center. call ahead and get a tour. not only is it a really cool space, but it has a plethora of organizations, from sports groups to gay teen social clubs. this the heart of the gay community, people working together to make life better, and this is the kind of place that shows the diversity that will allow your son to live a great gay life. next check out the west village piers. there's great new frank gehry condo buildings down there, totally renovated piers, and plenty of gay youth hanging out. you are right on the hudson with stunning views of the statue of liberty. then walk up to the gay liberation statues in sheridan square, where so much of gay politics started (the stonewall bar is where the riots took place in the 60s). then walk up the highline, the converted overpass that's now a beautiful walkway and park, all the way to chelsea, where you can pick out a great restaurant. along the way you will see gay & not gay mingling and enjoying new york everywhere. makes for a fantastic outing! so to speak :-)

I know I am not alone when I say I wish I had a dad like you when I was your sons age! KUDOS!!
