European cruises a bargain!?

  1. We've never been on a cruise, gay or otherwise, but have been considering taking one of the Atlantis cruises to Europe, since you can pay here in dollars and not have to deal with the terrible conversion rates at least for transportation and lodging. As we have never been on one of these cruises, we have some concerns... We're not really party boys and are not looking to hook up, are we going to feel uncomfortable or out of place? Any insight would be appreciated!

  2. ratt - you'll love cruising the Mediterranean! I'm taking a group of gay and gay-friendly folks from Baltimore on a 2wk CCL Freedom cruise in Oct that includes Rome, Venice, Dubrovnik, Barcelona, Monte Carlo, etc. The Cruise Planners group rate was only $800 pp inside, $1200 oceanview, $1800 veranda! Of course one has to add the taxes & surcharges and get over there, but still it is a great bargain. A friend just got back from Dublin and paid $15 for a pint of Guinness (and it is made there!). I used to be a travel snob and said I'd never go on a cruise. Now I'm so happy to unpack once, wake up in a new place, enjoy great food and entertainment, and be pampered - and 90% of the trip is prepaid in dollars. With the economy so f'd up this is a huge advantage.
Carnival, Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines are quite used to gay passengers and welcome diversity. I have had clients ask me if they would get twin beds and I tell them only if you want them. A lot clients have told me they had a blast on the gay only "party" cruises but actually prefered the gay-friendly trips that were mostly straight. There are always Friends of Dorothy meetings and lots of gay couples. Not as much cruising on the cruising though, but certainly good pricing compared to many of the all-gay cruises. Whatever you decide, you'll find a lot of variety in things to do onboard but the all gay cruises do tend to be much more party scene. Good luck! Gwenyth
